Google AI Max Auto-Upgrade: Contractor Audit Guide

Google may have changed eligible Search campaigns this month. Audit the settings and lead-quality baseline before wider matching turns into wasted calls and wasted spend.

The Google AI Max auto-upgrade is moving eligible Search campaigns into AI Max between September 1 and September 30, 2026. The affected campaigns use campaign-level broad match or standalone automatically created assets. Contractors should verify the live settings, record a baseline, and judge the change by qualified leads, booked jobs, and gross profit instead of Google's conversion count alone.

Google's August 12 developer notice confirms the progressive September migration. It also corrects a common mistake: Dynamic Search Ads are not being auto-migrated this month. Google moved that step to February 2027.

The operator decision
Do not turn every AI Max feature on or off because of a platform recommendation or a scary screenshot. Document what changed, protect location and brand controls, and test one meaningful variable against real sales outcomes.

What Changed With the Google AI Max Auto-Upgrade?

AI Max is an optimization layer inside an existing Search campaign, not a separate campaign type. Google groups search term matching, text customization, and final URL expansion under one umbrella. The September migration changes campaigns in place when they still use one of two older settings.

Legacy setupCurrent timingWhat Google maps
Campaign-level broad matchSeptember 1-30, 2026AI Max and search term matching on
Standalone automatically created assetsSeptember 1-30, 2026AI Max, search term matching, and text customization on
Dynamic Search AdsFebruary 1-28, 2027Not part of the September conversion

The distinction matters because older articles and some current posts still say DSA campaigns are moving in September. Google's updated product announcement says the DSA sunset begins in February 2027. Treat the later dated migration notice as the source of truth.

Which AI Max Settings Turn On During Migration?

The defaults are not the same for both September cohorts. A campaign migrated because of campaign-level broad match receives search term matching, while text customization and final URL expansion remain off. A campaign migrated because of standalone automatically created assets receives search term matching and text customization, while final URL expansion remains off.

Google's generic AI Max help page says manually enabling the full suite turns on text customization and final URL expansion. That is not the same as the cohort-specific September mapping. Verify the live campaign instead of assuming every AI Max component is active.

What remains unclear

Google's public migration table does not clearly resolve every overlap case, such as a campaign that used both legacy settings. A detailed independent review by Choice OMG flags that overlap as an open question. If the live account does not match the expected mapping, document the campaign and ask Google support for a written explanation before making a broad change.

Why Does the AI Max Migration Matter to Contractors?

Home-service Search campaigns often have expensive clicks, tight service areas, and low conversion volume. Wider query matching can find useful demand, but it can also find research traffic, job seekers, vendors, DIY searches, and out-of-area calls. Text customization adds another risk when landing pages contain outdated promotions or claims you would not approve in an ad.

Practitioner reports are mixed and mostly observational. One recent r/PPC account report claimed a much larger query set after AI Max was enabled, but that single account does not prove the same outcome will occur elsewhere. A 19-account audit found that the number of campaigns truly exposed to the forced path was much smaller after removing paused or already-migrated campaigns. Audit your own account before accepting either the panic or the sales pitch.

If a campaign is already marked Limited by budget, Google's help page warns AI Max may be less effective. Our Limited by budget contractor guide explains why the bid target and closed-job economics should be fixed before adding reach.

How Should Contractors Audit the AI Max Auto-Upgrade?

1

Export the current campaign settings

Record the AI Max umbrella, ad-group search term matching, text customization, final URL expansion, brand lists, location targeting, negative keywords, conversion goals, budget, and bidding strategy. Save the date and campaign ID.
2

Confirm which migration cohort applied

Check whether campaign-level broad match, standalone automatically created assets, or both were active. Do not label an ordinary keyword-level broad match campaign as automatically migrated without evidence.
3

Inspect search terms and geography

Compare post-migration queries and serviceable locations with the prior four weeks. Flag DIY, employment, vendor, competitor, informational, and out-of-area patterns. Keep normal seasonality and budget changes separate.
4

Review generated copy and destination pages

Look for unapproved discounts, financing claims, guarantees, service areas, and weak landing pages. Even with final URL expansion off, text customization can draw from the website and existing assets.
5

Reconcile platform conversions to the CRM

Match ad clicks to real contacts, qualified leads, held appointments, sold jobs, and revenue. The offline conversion guide shows how to return useful business outcomes without treating every form fill as a win.
6

Change one control at a time

If the evidence shows a problem, adjust the narrowest relevant control and record the timestamp. Avoid changing match behavior, creative automation, landing pages, bids, and budget in the same window.

How Do You Measure Whether AI Max Works?

Start with the business funnel, not the Google Ads dashboard. Count distinct contacts, qualified leads, booked appointments, held appointments, sold jobs, revenue, and gross profit. Then calculate cost per qualified lead, cost per booked job, and cost per sold job. Keep spam, duplicates, applicants, and out-of-area inquiries visible as their own categories.

A lower platform cost per conversion can hide worse economics if AI Max finds cheaper but weaker inquiries. The opposite can also happen: a higher cost per lead can still be profitable if close rate and job value improve. Give the campaign enough time to cover the normal sales cycle, but do not wait through obvious geographic leakage or broken lead routing.

The existing Google AI Mode ads guide covers a separate question: whether standard exact and phrase match campaigns can serve in AI Mode. Do not enable AI Max merely to chase that placement. Use the migration audit to decide whether its broader controls improve profitable booked work.

The measurement rule
Google can report conversions. Your CRM must prove whether those conversions became serviceable opportunities and profitable jobs.

Google AI Max Auto-Upgrade FAQ

Which Google Ads campaigns are being auto-upgraded to AI Max?

From September 1 through September 30, 2026, Google is progressively upgrading Search campaigns that still use the campaign-level broad match setting or standalone automatically created assets. This does not mean every Search campaign is affected.

Are Dynamic Search Ads moving to AI Max in September 2026?

No. Google moved the Dynamic Search Ads automatic migration to February 2027. September 2026 brings in-account DSA notices, while the current automatic migration covers campaign-level broad match and standalone automatically created assets.

What settings does the AI Max auto-upgrade turn on?

Campaign-level broad match migrations receive AI Max with search term matching on, while text customization and final URL expansion remain off. Standalone automatically created asset migrations receive search term matching and text customization on, with final URL expansion off. Advertisers should verify the live account because overlapping legacy settings are not fully documented.

Can a contractor turn AI Max off after the migration?

Google currently documents controls for disabling AI Max and its applicable sub-settings after migration. Do not assume those controls will remain unchanged forever. Record the current setup before editing, change one setting at a time, and preserve a clean comparison window.

How should contractors judge whether AI Max works?

Compare qualified leads, booked appointments, sold jobs, revenue, gross profit, and cost per sold job against a stable baseline. Platform conversions and lower cost per lead do not prove better lead quality, especially when query matching or generated assets change.
